Voters across the United States are heading to the polls today in a series of closely watched contests stretching from New York to California — the first major election test of President Donald Trump’s second term. The results could hint at how next year’s midterm elections may unfold.
New York City Mayoral Race
New Yorkers will decide who leads America’s largest city as a spirited contest comes to a close. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, an outspoken democratic socialist and rising star among younger progressives, holds a narrow polling advantage. He faces a challenge from independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, the former governor attempting a political comeback, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
President Trump surprised many on Monday by urging New Yorkers to support Cuomo, calling his record “successful,” though Cuomo downplayed the endorsement, framing it instead as an attempt to weaken Mamdani. Polls close at 9 p.m. ET.
New Jersey Governor’s Race
In New Jersey, Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill is battling Republican Jack Ciattarelli. Ciattarelli has leaned heavily on Trump’s support — a risky strategy in a traditionally blue state — while Democrats have deployed some of their most recognizable surrogates, including former President Barack Obama. Sherrill leads by single digits, but public polling suggests the contest could tighten late. Voting ends at 8 p.m. ET.
Virginia Governor’s Race
Virginia voters are poised to elect the state’s first female governor as Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears goes head-to-head with former Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger. Spanberger maintains a comfortable polling lead heading into Election Day. President Trump dialed into a tele-rally Monday to boost the GOP ticket but stopped short of a direct endorsement of Earle-Sears. Polls close at 7 p.m. ET.
California’s Proposition 50
On the West Coast, California residents are weighing Proposition 50, a ballot measure that would approve a new congressional map. Democratic leaders hope its passage could help flip five House seats. Republicans have already adopted new maps in four states, potentially netting nine seats. Analysts suggest the measure could pass by a wide margin, though either outcome would reshape congressional battles ahead of 2026. Polls close at 11 p.m. ET.
Aviation Concerns Amid Government Shutdown
As the federal shutdown continues, more air traffic controllers — still working without pay — are missing shifts or pursuing temporary jobs. While Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy insists intentional delays are meant to reduce stress on staff and ensure safety, travelers are experiencing severe wait times in cities including Chicago, Denver, Houston and Newark.
Aviation experts maintain that passenger safety has not been compromised, though flyers are advised to prepare for lengthy delays.
Food Stamp Benefits Cut and Delayed
The Trump administration confirmed Monday that millions of Americans relying on food assistance will receive only half of their typical November SNAP benefits, and many will see delays. The USDA says it is now limited to drawing from a contingency fund that cannot cover the program’s full needs during the shutdown. According to recent data, SNAP supports nearly 42 million Americans, averaging just over $350 per household monthly.
FBI Arrests Two in Alleged ISIS-Inspired Attack Plot
Federal agents arrested two men in Dearborn, Michigan, early Halloween morning in what authorities allege was a plot inspired by ISIS, potentially aiming for casualties on the scale of the 2015 Paris attacks. Officials claim the suspects possessed multiple AR-15 rifles, tactical equipment and plans for a domestic assault.
Dearborn, home to the nation’s largest Arab American community, reacted cautiously. Neighbors and attorneys expressed skepticism, noting the city’s long history of facing unfounded suspicion. Federal charges are now pending.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney Dies at 84
Former Vice President Dick Cheney, a dominant force in U.S. foreign policy and architect of the post-9/11 “war on terror,” has died at 84, his family announced. Serving alongside President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, Cheney wielded extraordinary influence, including spearheading the decision to invade Iraq. He battled heart disease for decades, receiving a life-saving transplant in 2012 — a gift he publicly praised in later interviews.
