The New York Yankees’ 2024 campaign ended in disappointment Wednesday night with a 5–2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. And as has become routine after an early postseason exit, scrutiny has quickly turned toward the club’s leadership — manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman.

Despite another October letdown and a 16-year World Series drought, indications around the organization suggest both Boone and Cashman are unlikely to be dismissed. Internally, the feeling is that Toronto was simply the better team over the five-game set, and management wasn’t necessarily in position to change the outcome.

But Yankees fans don’t see it quite as uniformly.

In a recent poll conducted by The Athletic, readers were asked to choose from four options:
• Fire both Boone and Cashman
• Keep both
• Fire Boone and retain Cashman
• Fire Cashman and retain Boone

Here’s how the voting broke down:

  • Fire both: 41%
  • Keep both: 26%
  • Fire Boone, keep Cashman: 21%
  • Fire Cashman, keep Boone: 12%

The largest share of fans — 41 percent — want a complete reset, calling for both men to go. Yet the second-most popular response, with 26 percent, was to keep the current regime intact. That means 67 percent of respondents either want continuity or a full overhaul, not a split decision.

Among those who favored only one change, Boone drew more heat than Cashman. Twenty-one percent would remove only Boone, compared to 12 percent who want Cashman out but would retain the manager.

What comes next remains to be seen. Cashman has been in the organization’s top front-office seat since 1998, and Boone has managed the club since 2018. If both stay put, 2025 would mark their 29th and ninth seasons in those roles, respectively.

For fans, the frustration is rooted in history. The Yankees haven’t won a World Series since 2009 — and they haven’t reached one since last year’s appearance. With expectations in New York consistently set at championship or bust, patience is wearing thin, and fan sentiment reflects it.

Now, all eyes turn to Hal Steinbrenner and the Yankees’ front office as the club heads into another pivotal offseason.
